What is the Stikine River height (USGS site) today?
We offer transportation service to the many USFS Recreation Cabins on the Stikine River system to learn more about locations and descriptions click HERE (F/S link).
The "Stikine Dream" is especially built for river tours, it has a 11 degree vee bottom for shallow water operations on the Stikine River. It allows us to access the neatest areas for sightseeing on the Stikine River. It works well for the tours that we offer to the Anan Wildlife Observatory (Breakaway Link) and LeConte Glacier (Breakaway Link).
The Stikine River is the Fastest Free Flowing Navigable river in North America.
WOW! WOW! WOW! Is the only way to describe the Stikine River. Once it was busy with riverboats carrying prospectors and supplies to the gold fields of interior Canada back in the late 1800's. Now the gold rushes are over and you can enjoy a jet boating experience in the Stikine/LeConte Wilderness area (F/S link) with Breakaway Adventures.
The Stikine River is one of the rare tours that can offer something for any age group and any interest. There is not enough room or time to tell you all about it, but here goes our best attempt.
Depending on the tide conditions, the first "adventure" begins by negotiating the Stikine River delta, which is a maze of sandbars at the mouth of the river, built up of ions of silt being washed down the entire 400 miles of Stikine River. After crossing the delta, be prepared for the lush greenery, narrow side sloughs, tall snow capped mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers that line the many sloughs that will be used as we navigate up river. Always keep your eyes open for bear and moose, birds and other wildlife. We make frequent stops for the many photo opportunities, to learn more and explore the river shores. There are many shores and diverse eco systems to explore on this one day tour.
April brings spawning Eulachon (hooligan, a small fish) which attracts Bald Eagles by the hundreds. This is the largest spring time concentration in North America, which is estimated to be approximately 2,000. A vast variety of other shorebirds, Sea Lions, and Harbor Seals are also abundant during this time of year. We offer special shoulder season rates in April.
July brings spawning salmon to some of the Stikine River tributaries, which offers the opportunity to do a little fishing on the tour.
Shakes Lake and Glacier are the main highlights on the Stikine River. This area of the Stikine is just plane unbelievable. How about collecting an iceberg at Shakes Glacier and cooling down your drink or using one to cool down the Chief Shakes Hot Springs about 1/2 hour later? The Hot Springs are U.S. Forest Service maintained hot tubs which are mineral springs-- so they don't smell like rotten eggs, thank God! (see the photo's below)
How about a walk to the Garnet Ledge to view where the children of Wrangell dig the garnets that they sell in town? While walking, your guide points out some flora and fauna, majestic Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock trees, that make up our Southeast rainforest. Perhaps a homestead tour located on Farm Island and the River Shoppe, also known as the "Stikine River Mall", owned and operated by Earl and Mary Benitz, year around residence on this remote Island.
Combine all these activities and the Stikine River is often described as "the best all around trip we took in Southeast Alaska".
Price - $160.50 per person. Tour length 6-8 hours. (price includes ALL associated taxes and fee's)
We also offer shorter tours direct to some of the above mentioned sights, so if the full day tour doesn't fit you budget please contact us direct via phone or email for costs and recommendations. Most of these shorter tours require a 4 person minimum.
The "Stikine Dream" (Breakaway link) is our primary vessel for Stikine River Tours.
