About Breakaway Adventures

Breakaway Adventures is a family owned and operated jet boat operation that has been in operation since 1989. All tours are operated within the Tongass National Forest and the Stikine/LeConte Wilderness Area. (FS Link) We pride ourselves in giving the very best in personalized tours to our guests!

Breakaway started its operations in 1998. We started as a saltwater fishing business with a 28' Silverton cruiser. In 1991 clients started asking about the Anan Wildlife Observatory, (Breakaway Link) in response to this we purchased a 19' Glasply speed boat. In 1993 clients inquired about the Stikine River (Breakaway Link) and we purchased our first 22' jet boat, we purchased a second identical boat in 1995. We soon sold both the Silverton and Glasply vessels and concentrated our efforts with the jet boats which we operated until 2000. We sold one of the 22' jet boats in 1999 and purchased our first 28' twin engine jet boat the "Stikine Dream" in 2000 and followed it up with the "Ocean Pro" in 2003.. In 2005 we purchased the "Motivator" from a fellow operator in Petersburg. (learn more about our current vessels below). Also around the mid 90's we expanded to offer tours to LeConte Glacier (Breakaway Link) which as the years have came and gone has become a very popular tour and can be expanded to include a stop at Petersburg, AK.

Breakaway Adventures operates the most up to date modern jet boats in Wrangell, our boats are custom built by Bentz' Boats (link) in Lewiston Idaho. The models Breakaway Adventures has chosen are the 28', 10' beam,18 passenger, "bus style" seating models. This configuration gives you the best comfort, the best viewing possible while underway. they are powered by twin 315 horsepower diesel engines for additional safety compared to gas powered boats. They are equipped with hard tops, sliding glass windows, bus style seating to name a few of the features. We meet or exceed all United States Coast Guard regulation for inspected vessels, plus we provide all passengers with Mustang float coats for additional warmth and comfort. All tours are fully narrated with complementary maps and gifts.

Breakaway Adventures has continued to be a leader in the industry of boat sightseeing tours in Wrangell, we were the first to adopt the newer style of water jet pumps that allowed for bigger vessels, more efficient, quieter operations and performance which most companies soon adopted also. We are the first and only company to go to the sliding glass windows and the bus style seating which makes for much improved passenger comfort. Our vessels with diesel engines provide a extra margin of safety and reliability over vessels with gas power plants.

All vessel skippers and crew are enrolled in a random Drug Test Consortium per USCG regulations and are CPR and First Aid qualified, each year and throughout the year skippers and crews are randomly tested for responses to onboard fires, man overboard, life raft deployment, use of the VHF radio's, and other emergencies per USCG regulations. Our vessels are also inspected each year by USCG inspectors for serviceability. Skippers all hold USCG Master licenses in order to operate our vessels.

The "Stikine Dream" is especially built for river tours, it has a 11 degree vee bottom for shallow water operations on the Stikine River (Breakaway Link). It allows us to access the neatest areas for sightseeing on the Stikine River. It works well for all the other tours that we offer also. Both the "Stikine Dream" and the "Ocean Pro" have forward facing seats, all around sliding glass windows, dual heaters, overhead storage compartments, twin engines for safety and are painted inside and out. Nothing but a class act here. We do have a optional "head" restroom that can be installed for groups that request this feature.

The "Ocean Pro" is especially designed for the saltwater tours that we offer, the Anan Bear Observatory (Breakaway Link) and LeConte Glacier (Breakaway Link) tours. The "Ocean Pro" as a 18 degree vee bottom that gives you a much smoother ride in the waves that can develop around Wrangell, plus it still can be used on the Stikine River Tour. The "Ocean Pro" interior is identical to the "Stikine Dream". We do have a optional "head" restroom that can be installed for groups that request this feature.

The "Motivator" is a unique vessel. While a landing craft is not your "normal" looking tour boat it has some very distinct advantages. Nothing short of awesome shore access, through the drop down bow ramp, which is important at Anan, Stikine River and LeConte Glacier since there are not docks at any of these places. A football field of elbow room for photography and checking out the sights. Smooth ride as the stern or back of a vessel where you will be seated is the smoothest ride to be had when the water is rough. Plus it has dual heaters, interior paint job, glass windows and is extremely quite compared to most other vessels. This boat is awesome for shore departures at the Anan Bear Observatory (Breakaway Link)

The "Glacier Chaser" has most of the same features as the "Stikine Dream" and "Ocean Pro". Seating for 8 passengers but we operate it as a "6 pax" vessel. Locally built to our specifications it is a great general purpose vessel built for folks that want a more intimate personal experience. It is the only 6 pax boat in Wrangell with forward facing seats, sliding glass windows, etc..
